Agreed with Long Hopes and Dreams.George says. " An' it'd be our own,an' nobody could can. If we don't like a guy we could say "Get the hell out" and by God he's got to do it. An' if a fren come along, why we'd have an extra bunk, an' we'd say " Why don't you spend the night?" An' by god he would. We'd have a setter dog and a couple stripe cats , but you gotta watch out them cats don't get the little rabbits"

"Hopes and dreams" is a topic. Keep looking. "If you love something let it go" is a cliche. Keep looking.

The theme for this ch. is intelligence and kindness. Having intelligence doesn't make you a better person but kindness does.

seems your theme was much like grant's, however.... Yours happens to be written in a slightly higher vocabulary.

Seems like I didn't ask for anyone's opinion on that because I know what I wrote and no its not the same as Grant's but thank you though. :) I definitely won't take it into consideration.

This is similar to what other have said.

Goals, hope, and dreams are all soon or far to come. It's up to everyone whether to pursue them or not.

The will of many is stronger than the will of one.
Examples: Candy's is pressured into letting his dog go. Curley is blackmailed into keeping the fight a secret. George, Lennie, and Candy can pool their money together in one month to buy a plot of land.

yes... yes... yes!!!
It sounds better than the one I had, "learn and recover from you mistakes" (e.g. Candy realizes he should have killed the dog himself, then cheers up fast and plans a better future with George and Lennie. Curley definitely learned from his mistakes when he fought with Lennie. And Earlier, George spoke to Slim about why he stopped playing jokes on poor and submissive Lennie)

how about:
The world is constantly moving and shifting, with or without it's inhabitants, (People like Candy, Candy's dog, George, and Lennie.)

What part of this theme is specifically related to chapter 3?

Reply
Elizabeth Hill
4/6/2013 18:15:11

Remember when Candy asked George if he could join him and Lennie in buying a house? Remember when he stated his fear

" They'll can me purty soon. just as soon as i can't swamp out no bunkhouses, they'll put me out on the county" ..... "you see what they done to my dog tonight? they says he wasn't no good to himself nor nobody else."
this was on page 60 paragragh three.

so perhaps i didn't word the theme very well, because my initial message i got from that chapter was something to the effect that if your old and useless, the rest of the world is likely to leave you behind because they will continue to move forward, with or without you.

Here are my two thoughts for the theme:

1. More can be overcome through the help of others.
2. Strength can be found through peer pressure.
