Modern Masters - Exploring Poetry in Song
PART I. Modern Masters - Annotating Lyrics
Choose two songs and find as many devices as you can. Print the lyrics and write on them. Bring it to class.
Personification
Gives human characteristics to inanimate objects.
The moon looks down on us. Simile
A comparison of two unalike things that uses "like" or "as."
The moon looks like a balloon. Direct Metaphor
Tells directly that one thing is something else.
The moon is a balloon. Implied Metaphor
Does not make a direct comparison, instead it suggests the comparison with shared characteristics.
Without a string, the moon drifts across the sky. |
PART II. Modern Masters - Visualize the Figurative
Make a poster that shows how two devices have something in common. You'll choose a device from one of your songs, and you'll choose the other device from one of the poems in the book. The better posters will figure out an interesting way to merge the two devices together.
